Historic temple in Saga with 8,000 stone statues representing souls. Founded by Kobo Daishi. Beautiful bamboo grove path. Sento Kuyo ceremony (late August) with candlelit stone statues is magical. Peaceful area in western Arashiyama hills.

Hours: 9:00 AM - 4:30 PM (last entry 4:00 PM), winter until 3:30 PM

  3. 3 In Saga-Toriimoto area - combine with Gio-ji, Nison-in

Late August (usually 23-24) for Sento Kuyo ceremony with 8,000 candles at stone statues - magical and atmospheric. Autumn foliage good. Less crowded than central Arashiyama.
