Yasaka Shrine

八坂神社

Also known as Gion Shrine, this vibrant Shinto shrine is the heart of Gion district and host of Japan's most famous festival - Gion Matsuri (July). Founded over 1,350 years ago. Beautifully illuminated at night with vermilion buildings creating magical atmosphere.

Visit: 30-45 minutes (add time for Maruyama Park or Gion exploration)
Entrance: Free admission
Hours: Open 24 hours (shrine office 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM)

Best Time to Visit

Evening when beautifully lit up (stunning after dark). Cherry blossom season in adjacent Maruyama Park. Gion Matsuri festival month (July 1-31, main parade July 17). New Year's (very crowded but festive).
