Nijo Castle

A UNESCO World Heritage flatland castle built in 1603 by Tokugawa Ieyasu as his Kyoto residence. Famous for its "nightingale floors" that squeak to alert of intruders, magnificent Kano school wall paintings, and serene Ninomaru Garden. Site where the shogunate formally ended in 1867.

Best Time to Visit
Cherry blossom season (late March-early April) when the castle's 400 trees bloom. Autumn brings beautiful maples in the garden. Spring illumination event is spectacular. Weekday mornings for fewer crowds in Ninomaru Palace.
