Konkaikomyo-ji Temple
金戒光明寺
A grand hilltop Jodo Buddhism headquarters founded 1175 by Honen. Served as Kyoto's military headquarters during the Bakumatsu period (1860s). Its elevated position offers sweeping views of the city, and the massive Sanmon gate rivals Nanzen-ji's in scale. Known locally as "Kurodani-san."

Best Time to Visit
Autumn (mid-November) for spectacular maples and special illumination events. The elevated position means you see autumn colors across the city. Spring also beautiful.
