Jakko-in Temple
寂光院
A small, deeply moving Tendai nunnery in Ohara where Empress Kenreimon'in retired after the devastating fall of the Taira clan in 1185. She spent 30 years here praying for the souls of her son Emperor Antoku and her family who perished at sea. A place of profound historical sorrow.

Best Time to Visit
Autumn (mid-November) for spectacular maple colors in the small garden. Also beautiful in any season for the moving historical atmosphere. Ohara is always peaceful. Cherry blossoms in April.
